As summer is here, beach goers and shoppers are geared up for a good break. With so many travel promotions going on in the media as well as the online travel booking sites, it is tempting to book myself to one getaway. Everyone enjoys travel vacations at least once a year. It’s a time where you put aside your work, relax your mind and get recharged. Yet, many people are too busy with career building that sometimes taking vacations is considered a waste of time for them.

Whenever I get to travel, I will put in lots of efforts to compare hotels and find the right discount accommodation for my travel. If my budget allows, I prefer boutique hotels since the service is usually more personalized. When I was staying at the Lanson Place Hong Kong last December, I had such personalized service that I can’t wait to go back there. I complained about a lightbulb that went off and in no less than 10 mins, the maintenance staff was already at my door.

In my earlier post, I wrote about our family vacation to Genting Highlands, what I didn’t mentioned was the details of the rooms in First World Genting Hotel.

While I had a nice superior deluxe room, my brother had a smaller standard room which was about 20 over sqm. My superior deluxe room was about 35 sqm, a comfortable room size for 3 people. As for my brother, he only wished he had his sleep number bed with him since there were 3 adults and 2 kids sharing in a 2 single bedded room.

You can save on your room rates if you travel during off peak season or better still, you can exchange for free rooms if you have sufficient world club or genting card points. First World genting hotel is well located and is accessible to both the outdoor and indoor theme parks. The only complaint I had was the not so nice food at exorbitant prices in most of the restaurants. So if food isn’t that important for your vacation, then a trip to Genting will be a nice one for you and your family.

One of the ways to travel with little stress or efforts is to book yourself in a tour holiday. You can do that by calling your travel agent or browse through the web for tour packages in your travel destination. Discount accomodation is usually granted to tour companies so you can get quite a good deal for your tour package.

The only thing I don’t quite like about tour packages is the jam-packed timing. Normally you need to get up early to meet in a group and won’t be home til late at night. This sort of travel itinerary can be tiring for children. Some of the tour leaders will take you to buy cheap wholesale stuff and it can be pretty boring sometimes. Many years ago, we joined a tour to Thailand and the tour leader brought us to a jewelry factory to shop for local gems. While some of these local trips can be nice, others can be too commercialized.

Tour packages are great for those who have no time to plan their own itineraries. So if you like a regimented travel schedule, a tour package is what you should choose. Otherwise, be adventurous, book your own discount accomodation online and go free and easy.

I may be a travel bug but I’m not a big fan of local holidays in Malaysia. Infact, my hubby has to convince me to take domestic holidays. Don’t ask me why but I’m really not a great fan when it comes to having holidays in any part of Malaysia, even if I can find cheap direct travel to the destination.

But last weekend, I made an exception. The destination didn’t matter for once We took a trip to Genting Highlands to meet my mom and brother’s family and I was glad we all had a nice time. It was wonderful seeing how the kids enjoyed themselves in the indoor theme park. I know my son will be thrilled to go outdoors but he won’t qualify for any of the thrill rides to his height limit. They played so much bumper car rides and I thought it was abit overdone.

As for the adults, we just watched the kids and reminisced our childhood memories. Genting Highlands was so crowded on the weekends and I wondered if it was the best days to have the kids there. Since I’m no gambler, I was spending more time babysitting the kids. But on the second day, we spent a few hours in the heated water park and it was real fun. My boy enjoyed himself to the core and I only wished it was a bigger park with more wet slides!

The superior deluxe room in First World Genting Hotel was alright. Not luxurious but nice enough for a couple of nights’ stay. For the price of less than RM300 (nett) with 2 buffet breakfasts, it was a good deal though the buffet was not nice at all. I just wouldn’t pay RM26 for a buffet breakfast like this cos there are better breakfast options at a lower price in the resort.

Food is secondary when it comes to family vacations like this. It was more for catching up with each other and spending quality time together. I was hoping to shop for my iphone accessories but couldn’t find a shop there that carries the products.

There are many coaches for direct travel to Genting Highlands if you are traveling from Singapore or other Malaysia towns. The Genting website has all the info if you need to find more relevant details. On the overall, Genting is a nice place to relax and yes, you can still get wifi in a few cafes like Starbucks and Coffee Bean. As long as you are not going all out to place your bets and stakes in the gaming places, it is not a bad place to get away.

It’s been such a busy weekend. We are heading for Phuket tomorrow and I’m still trying to clear up some last minute stuff before our vacation! If you are planning to travel and need some ideas including getting discount accomodation, here are some simple things to keep in mind.
